Harakat al-Mahrumin was established by Shia Imam Musa al-Sadr as the father of the movement and Hussein el-Husseini as the political member of the parliament. The objective was to reform the disadvantaged system toward the Shia community of Lebanon. Musa al-Sadr declared peace among all Lebanese confessions and religions.
Its armed wing was called Lebanese Resistance Regiments, in Arabic: Afwaj al-Muqawama al-Lubnaniyya, that became known by its acronym Amal.
