Bangka Belitung Islandsball is a 31st provinceball of Indonesia-icon.png Indonesiaball. Located on southeastern coasts of Sumatra, comprised of two main islands, Bangka island and Belitung Island. 


Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.pngBangka Belitung Islandsball is an area that has a unique range of cultures and languages. Just like other provinces in Indonesia-icon.png Indonesiaball, Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.png Bangka Belitung Islandsball has served as a European and Japanese-Empire-icon.png Japanese colony. Prior to the colonial era, Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.pngBangka Belitung Islandsball has become part of several kingdoms in Sumatra and Java. Srivijaya-icon.png Srivijayaball and Majapahit-icon.png Majapahitball are the kingdoms who settled Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.png Bangka Belitung Islandsball to expand its power. The first Europeans arrived in Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.pngBangka was the British Empire-icon.png UKball on 20 May 1812. However, with the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824, British Empire-icon.png UKball left , and Netherlands-icon.png Netherlandsball took over. However, there is a coup attempt by local élite through Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.png Depati Barin and his son Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.png Depati Amir who tried to oppose the colonization of their home islands, unfortunately, the war was won by Netherlands-icon.png Netherlandsball and later, Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.png Depati Amir was exiled to Kupang in East Nusa Tenggara. Therefore, Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.pngDepati Amir became a national hero and her name was remembered through its regional airport, the Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.png Depati Amir Airport.

Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.png Bangka Belitung has a long history with China-icon.pngChinese migration (mainly Hakka people). China-icon.pngChinese people in the 13th century had already started to migrate into the Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.png Bangka region. In the 17th century, the rulers of South Sumatra-icon.png Palembangball saw there was extraordinary potential which later they found tin mines in Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.png Belitung. The tin is the main reason why the Netherlands-icon.png Dutch decided to bring contract workers from mainland China-icon.png Chinaball that resettled in the islands. The tin itself is what helped drive the island's development and make it the place it is today. Since then, some of China-icon.pngChinese migrants have gone home while others decided to stay. The one who decided staying began assimilating with local people and is followed by intermarriages, they live coexisting peacefully in spite of differences in religion and ethnicity. When anti-Chinese riots occurred in some parts of Indonesia-icon.png Indonesiaball at the end of the Asian Dictator-icon.png Soeharto regime in 1998, the locals and those of China-icon.png Chinese descent was not concerned and still lived peacefully in the Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.png province.

Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.png Bangka Belitung Islandsball province is created as the 31st province by the Government of the Indonesia-icon.png Indonesiaball based on Law No. 27 of 2000 on the establishment of Bangka-Belitung Islands-icon.png Bangka Belitung Islandsball province which was part of the South Sumatra-icon.png South Sumatraball province. The provincial capital is Pangkalpinangball.
