Gavarball was born when Armenians from Bayazetball moved to make a settlement. He was first called Nor Bayazetball or Novo-Bayazetball during the Ottoman empire. He was also inhabited by Urartians way earlier. He was severley damaged by the Persians. After the Russo-Persian war the USSR came and annexed all of Armenia. Gavarball was renamed to Kamoball in honor of a Bolshevik revolutionary Kamo (Simon Ter-Petrosian). He had a population of 36,400 people. After Independence He renamed his name to Gavarball which means county. He was starting to lose population because of his failing Soviet-era infrastructure and his floundering industrial capacity.
