Operation Market Garden was a WWII Allies operation.
The Plan
The Allies wanted to encircle the Ruhr, where most German industry was. The 'Market' operation was for the First Allied Airborne Army to seize key bridges in the Netherlands while the 'Garden' operation was for the XXX Corps to advance and back up the Airborne Army. They would then be over the Rhine and would be able to capture the heart of German industrial power.
The Failure
However, the Germans didn't just give the Ruhr to the allies and had already prepared tough defences. The British landings were mostly failures and the remaining troops couldn't breach the German forces. When the Allies did manage to break the German front line, widespread errors led to a major issue as the troops were not backed up properly. However, they succeeded in Nijmegen but when the Allies moved to Arnhem, the troops were immediately under attack by a large amount of German forces. The air force tried to back the Allied soldiers but bad weather ruined their plan and tanks were cut off by German resistance. A few days later, Operation Market Garden had failed with over 1100 Allied troops dead and 6000 prisoner.
